Sasha Luccioni
Sasha Luccioni is leading the charge in integrating artificial intelligence with climate-conscious initiatives. As the AI & Climate Lead at Hugging Face, she has been instrumental in efforts to assess and reduce AI’s environmental footprint. Her interest in this field was sparked several years ago by a critical realization: while AI has immense potential, it also carries environmental costs that need to be addressed.
In 2020, Luccioni contributed to the development of a tool that allows developers to measure the carbon emissions generated by AI models. This resource has since been downloaded over a million times. Two years later, she co-authored a significant study estimating that BLOOM, a large-scale multilingual open-source AI model, would emit over 50 metric tons of CO2 over its lifespan—comparable to around 80 transatlantic flights.
At Hugging Face, Luccioni is focused on bringing these insights into practical applications beyond the research community. In October, she shared her findings on the TED stage and is currently working on a pioneering initiative: an "energy star rating for AI." Expected to launch later this year, this system will help engineers and startups compare AI models based on their climate impact, encouraging more environmentally responsible choices.
Rather than limiting AI adoption, Luccioni’s mission is to foster more sustainable practices, ensuring that AI can contribute positively to the fight against climate change while minimizing its environmental drawbacks.
